Mask Project

For our first project here at animas we studied sociology. We read “To Kill A Mockingbird” to find examples of racism or of people and how they identify. As well as watching videos on feral children. At the end of the semester we made masks and painted them to be what we felt we are on the inside.

When we had first started the mask project I looked forward to it, thought it would be a fun experience. It was interesting to me to see how others looked at themselves and that people hide behind their own faces. As we moved into the mask making process it became noticeable that I was struggling in painting my mask. I wound up getting rid of my first mask do to how it just wasn’t me. I then made a new mask and discovered that the hardest part of the project for me would be the painting. I attempted to come up with an idea for the way i wanted to paint my mask. I never made a mask that i was willingly proud of.

I was very impacted by how this topic really widen my view on myself and others. I connected with how we hide behind a metaphorical mask. At the end of the project a week or two later i realized that i didn't do the project not because I didn't want to but because I didn't know to leave my mask white because i hide behind space and air not a wall or a face.
